The proposal here is to convert the 1907 Listed Magistrates Courts into the Heritage Centre and Galleries.
This would include the Sunderland Science and Industry Museum (SIM) which would be devoted to science, technology and industry with emphasis on the city's achievements in these fields.
It would be an exciting, informative and entertaining place, similar in feel to the Science Museum in London and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, and will showcase the city’s industrial past, present and future.
It would feature the past glories of our Shipbuilding, Coal Mining and Glass Industries but it wil also highlight our industries of today including the Automotive Industry, Engineering and Software.
The Heritage Centre and Galleries will have an important educational role, introducing children to industry and science in an interesting and fun way similar to Eureka! The National Children's Museum in Halifax and the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.
It would be a major source of pride to the city and provide an important tourist attraction and driver to the City Centre economy.
The HCG could also be the new home for the Northern Gallery of Contemporary Art further adding to the visitor attraction and experience
